Something is swirling around in this ‘lil ole brain

There are so many things I love about the internet. The connections. The community. The food.

Yeah, I said food.

I can’t think of an easier way to get new recipes than to create a Mr. Linky, spread the word and then hop around the web while drooling on my screen printing out amazing recipes.

And I also can’t imagine anything much worse than having to cook dinner in a hot house. I have stood with the freezer open just to cool myself while cooking dinner because I foolishly decided to boil some potatoes/bake biscuits at 400 degrees/fry meat/sweat like a pig.

Because y’all are so creative and domestic-y and all, I’m gonna beg you for some good easy stuff to feed my family open up a couple of posts in a few weeks so that we can all benefit from each others domestic-y-ness.

Don’t worry if you aren’t domestic-y. Your recipes are probably the best ones when it comes to not heating up the kitchen (microwave canned veggies… butter some bread…) Please share your secrets with the rest of us who are slaves to the stove in the heat of the summer.

I will be preparing some buttons to spread the word. And by all means, spread the word! You don’t want your only other choice to be my recipe for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, now do you?

Check back for details in the next few days. And in the meantime, start thinking about what recipes you’ll share.

There will be two separate recipe carnivals on 2 separate days.
1) Foods for days when it’s too hot to cook
2) Foods to take to a picnic.

Start thinkin’. And get ready!

Capturing Motherhood in a Photo

I adore this photo. In all of its blurriness, there is so much that is reflected in this moment. There is love, nurturing, excitement, adoration, hope and imperfection.

This photo captures firsts: meeting new brother, baby brother becoming a big brother. But it also captures lasts: last baby, last birth. Never again will my body carry a baby.

It is a bittersweet photo. Just like mothering. With all of the fears, worry and sadness, there is also joy, hope and goodness.

And the blurriness? It is a reminder to me that in spite of the imperfections of my parenting, there are still memories being made and treasured in our home.

Head to 5 Minutes for Mom for your chance to win $1000 and other great prizes just by sharing your photo.

(and thank-you to all who asked a question of me in the prior post. I’ll start answering them tomorrow.)

Have you been bitten?

I’ve had several people contact me about my Fight the Frump posts. Most of the response has been positive. But there are a few who have expressed concern over the fact that, while funny, the focus of these makes them feel bad or worse about themselves. They feel/worry that the focus of these posts is all about self-focus.

All of this got me thinking…
Somehow, we seem to equate trying to take care of ourselves with selfish thinking. And then this got me thinking about something that Beth Moore says in the Daniel bible study : from p. 26 –

They (Daniel , Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego) learned the language, literature, and customs all right, but only so God could use them in the midst of it. They read the language of their culture with the lens of God. Thereby, they became culturally relevant without becoming spiritually irrelevant. Against all odds, they retained a God-centered worldview so that ultimately the world could view their God. Amazing.

It is true that if we obsess over what we wear and how we fit in, then we are focusing on the wrong thing. But there is nothing wrong with a healthy perspective on fashion and style.

Now, with that said, I’m gonna Fight the Frump Frugal-Style!

Having style does not have to cost a bunch of money.

Amount of money spent does not equal good taste.
TONS of Money wasted spent + tacky taste = expensive tacky taste. Want proof?

Spring fashions are starting to come into stores! How can we fight the frump and not break the bank?

Here are some ideas:

Have you heard of Bitten by Sarah Jessica Parker? If not, you are missing out on some great buys on quality clothing. (The spring collection has not been released yet, so these examples are from the winter line, but they are super cute nonetheless.)

Check out this Not So fuzzy math: You may not be able to read the tiny writing under the photo, but those numbers I added on are correct! $27.00 for the ENTIRE outfit!

This top: $8.98

Jeans: $8.98

Next week, I’ll still be Fightin’ the Frump frugal style. You won’t want to miss it.
